Maine Medical Center To Host Medical Camp

May 2009 - Ten Maine-grown college students will have a firsthand look at the world of health care this summer, as they participate in a new Mini-Medical School Program, hosted by Maine Medical Center (MMC), Portland, Maine.

The program, part of the MMC-Tufts School of Medicine partnership, welcomes native Mainers who are attending colleges ranging from University of Maine to Cornell University. They'll spend a week at MMC, taking classes, shadowing staff, touring our facilities, and learning about the world of medicine from the inside of the region's largest medical center. Although the program has an academic basis, there are no exams.

"The goal of the program is twofold," says Bud Higgins, MD, a physician in MMC's Emergency Department, and member of the "Pipeline Committee," a group reaching out to prospective students about the MMC-Tufts program. "First, to provide exposure to health care -- and specifically the workings of a hospital --- to outstanding students who are considering a career in medicine. Secondly, by reaching out to these students during their undergraduate years, we hope they'll consider the MMC-Tufts program when the time comes to select a medical school."

The Mini-Medical School is June 1 – 5, 2009.
